New home, how long should I wait before doing my paving?
4 July 2022
Have you just bought a new house and wondering how long to wait before doing your paving? When is the best time to do this type of work? Indeed, there are a few things to take into account. The following article will attempt to answer some of your questions in this regard.
When is the best time to paving?
In terms of outside temperature, the best time to do paving work is between the beginning of June and the end of September. It is during this period that the temperature is ideal. Outside of these months it is still possible to do the asphalt as long as the ground is not frozen, but the quality of the finish could be diminished if the air temperature drops below freezing overnight. After the holidays, therefore, after the thaw, the ground can subside unevenly, so this is not the ideal time to undertake this type of work either. The asphalting work is usually not urgent and can often wait until June before being done. You will then be sure to obtain a better guarantee in terms of the quality of execution and the life of the paving.
Paving a new house
If you have just built your house, it is best to wait until after the first winter, that is to say 6 to 12 months between the time of compacting the gravel and laying the asphalt. This waiting period will allow the gravel to compact further with the help of rain and snow. The wait is not necessary in the case of an existing house. In this case, two weeks are enough between compacting the gravel and laying the asphalt. Usually, municipalities require paving to be done during the first year after construction. The main problem with compaction is within two feet of the house or garage door. This is where the excavated soil is deeper and the ground could tend to subside for several years after construction. To avoid encountering this problem, it is recommended to fill the excavated part with 3/4 inch crushed stone up to the gravel foundation of the paving. This type of crushed stone does not contain fine particles and it compacts less over time.
