Quick Maintenance: How to Clean Your Pavers After Spring

3 June 2025

Spring often leaves traces of soil, sand, plant debris, and moss on paved surfaces. A quick cleaning in June restores sparkle and safety to your driveway, terrace, or patio. Here are the key steps for fast, effective maintenance:

  • Preliminary Sweeping

Use a stiff-bristled broom to clear pavers and joints of dead leaves, twigs, and sand residue. This manual pre-cleaning makes it easier for water and cleaning products to do their work.

  • Gentle Rinsing

Attach an adjustable-nozzle hose and select a wide, moderate-pressure spray to avoid washing away joint sand. Work from top to bottom, sweeping the water to carry dirt away gradually.

  • Applying a Specialized Cleaner

Choose a biodegradable, alkaline cleaner formulated for pavers. Spray it evenly over the surface, let it sit for 5–10 minutes (without letting it dry), then scrub with a long-handled brush to dislodge moss and algae.

  • High-Pressure Treatment (Optional)

For stubborn stains, use a pressure washer set between 80 and 120 bar, holding the nozzle at least 30 cm from the pavers. Avoid a concentrated jet and direct angles to protect the paving’s integrity.

  • Weed Removal and Joint Refilling

Once dry, pull out any weeds by hand and clean out the joints. Refill with polymeric sand or a suitable mortar, then tamp it down to lock the pavers firmly in place.

  • Protective Sealing

Apply a water-repellent sealer to guard against future stains and simplify regular cleaning. Thereafter, an annual rinse will keep your paving looking like new.

These tasks can be completed in half a day, revitalizing your outdoor area and enhancing your property’s value.
